For various purposes, the different types of motor oil on the market are designed. You need to understand the importance of the oil additives, viscosity scores, and classification codes to select the correct type of oil for your car.
Refiners mix in different additives to help the oil keep your engine cool, clean, and corrosion-free, which can account for as much as 25 percent of the oil cost.

The starburst sign on the oil bottle label indicates that the oil meets the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee’s (ILSAC) existing engine safety standard and fuel efficiency specifications, a joint initiative between U.S. and Japanese automotive manufacturers.
Some argue that synthetic oils allow longer periods between changes in oil, lead to less wear on parts of the engine, and function at higher engine temperatures. There is yet to prove the longer interval argument.
Ask yourself the following questions in order to select the best oil for your vehicle:
- What kind of oil have you been using? There’s no need to switch labels if your car is running well.
- What kind of oil does your owner’s manual recommend? Using something other than the recommended oil can invalidate the warranty on a new vehicle if your vehicle is still under warranty.
- Do you live in a very cold or very hot climate? Are they mountainous? Are there sharp temperature swings in the area where you live? A number of temperatures is protected by multi-weight oils. In cold weather, the lower the number before the “W,” the better the oil works.
- How old is your vehicle? It has built up quite a bit of sludge if you have an old car that has been running on single-weight oil for most of its life, and certain single-weight oils do not have detergent in them.
- How worn is your vehicle’s engine? Multi-weight oil is not reliably thick enough to lubricate the worn engine parts that have become smaller when worn down , leaving larger gaps between them if your car has logged a lot of miles for several years and has been running on 30- or 40-single-weight oil. As the engine gets older, turn to heavier single-weight oil to keep the oil dense enough to fill these holes and start running more roughly or burning up oil more quickly. If you have run on 30-weight oil, at least during the summer, turn to 40-weight when the oil starts to thin out.
Two types of oil are on the market: single-viscosity oil and multi-viscosity oil. Almost every vehicle is designed to run on multi-viscosity oil. The lower the number, the thinner the oil and the more easily it flows. In 10W-40 oil, for example, the two numbers mean that it’s a multi-viscosity oil. The 10W is an index that refers to how the oil flows at low temperatures (in Winter); 40 refers to how it flows at high temperatures.
If you suddenly switch to multi-viscosity oil, the detergent in it will free all the gook in your engine, and the gook will really foul things up.
